Croatia is a recent hot spot for travel and it’s easy to see why after visiting. The people are so welcoming, the waters are deep blue, and there is so much history in the old towns. You wouldn’t think of Croatia as being a place for wine, but a local will tell you all about how much they love their local wine.
When you think of travel to Croatia, you immediately think of the stunning coastline. But, if you want to get a sense of the actual Croatian culture and life, you’ve got to at LEAST spend 24 hours in Zagreb. Make sure to enjoy the many cafes, coffee and Croatian wine. Here is how I would spend 48 hours.
Day 1
AM Wander the city center ‘Gradec’ to get an overview of the city and culture. Start at St. Mark’s Square to see the church with the coat of arms, then walk to the Dolac market, checking out the old stone wall (Kamenita vrata) and old tower (Lotrščak Tower) on your way. After, head down to Ban Jelacic Square and enjoy the architecture while you make your way to the stunning Cathedral of Zagreb and Our Lady of the Assumption monument.
PM Walk along the Strossmayerovo Setaliste (back by the Lotrscak Tower) for the best over Zagrab. At the end, you’ll come to Tunel Gric which is an interesting and quick walk through (but a must see if you’re there around Christmas). Then wander to the nearby Park Gric for a relaxing stop with more great views.
Day 2
AM Pick a couple museums to see. There are more museums per square meter in Zagreb than in any other city in the world. I would probably choose the Zagreb City Museum, the Museum of Naïve Art, or the Museum of Broken Relationships.
PM Walk through the horseshoe of parks. There is green space and more museums, it’s a good way to see some architecture and choose the pace of your afternoon. The Botanical Garden is beautiful and Ledeni park or Ice Park is a must if you are there in the winter.
Something doesn’t interest you, or have more time? Here are some more ideas:
