3 Days in Ljubljana Itinerary

Slovenia was a unique breath of fresh air to visit, and surprisingly became one of our favorite countries on our European backpacking expedition. It has a beautiful coastline, some magnificent mountains, and picturesque European towns. The people are warm and inviting and you can find some good food too.

Day 1

ALL DAY – Spend your day strolling through town, stopping in cafes, restaurant and bars when you want. Some of the top things to look out for are:

  • The Bridges (Triple Bridges, Butchers Bridge, Dragon Bridge)
  • Central Market
  • St. Nicholas Church – very ornate with a beautifully painted ceiling and gold casing on the pipe organ
  • Weird/unique statues all over

I would also recommend taking some time to walk along the emerald green Ljubljanica River. You can also choose to take a tour of some kind (food tour, beer tour etc..)

Day 2

ALL DAY – Take a trip to Triglov National Park and Lake Bled. It is a lake surrounded by trees, mountains and cliffs (if you’ve heard of anything in Slovenia, it is probably Lake Bled). The lake is free, but taking a boat to the island with the church will cost you around $13. Vintgar Gorge is nearby and easily accessed by a shuttle, and it is a beautiful place to hike around along the gorge and see caves and waterfalls

Day 3

AM – Tivoli Park is a beautiful and relaxing place to spend the morning. You’ll get a taste of local life, and it’s a great place to have a picnic if you want to. I think it’s fun to rent a bike too. You can visit Tivoli Mansion and the Museum of Modern History as well if those interest you.
PM – Hike up to Ljubljana Castle (or take the funicular) which provides an amazing view of the city. You can explore a lot of the castle for free, or pay about $11 to see it as well as the museum.

Something doesn’t interest you, or have more time? Here are some more ideas

Add on Activities in Ljubljana

Metelkova – neighborhood with a huge art scene and nightlife

Piran – this would be a day trip to a seaside town on the Adriatic sea; it’s a small town that is nice to just walk around

Postojna Caves and Predjama Castle – day trip to see underground caves and a castle built into a limestone cliff
