48 Hours in Sarajevo

Despite the clear signs of struggle and warfare, Sarajevo is a beautiful city rich in diversity (both religious and cultural). Sarajevo is worth at least a 2-3 day stop on your trip to Bosnia & Herzegovina. I hope your time is spent more dry than ours. We got soaked the first day we arrived!

Day 1

AM  Take a free walking tour through the old town. Wander through the Baščaršija bazar, explore the side streets filled with shops and eateries, and visit the Cathedral, Mosques and Synagogues to get a glimpse at all the religions that co-exist in this city. You’ll also walk along the water and learn about the dramatic history of the Latin Bridge, see the beautiful City Hall and get a taste of Sarajevo local beer.

PM Hike up to the Yellow Fortress, which isn’t really yellow or a fortress, but the ledge of the ruins offer a magnificent view of the city. While you’re up in the hills, stroll around the neighborhood to get a glimpse of everyday life. Look out for neighborhood cemeteries, bakeries, schools and home. Use the rest of your afternoon to browse through the Bascarsija which you passed through on your walking tour and have some good Bosnian coffee.

Day 2

AM Take the cable car up to Mount Trebevic for a wonderful view and a little hiking. This used to be an old bobsled track used in the 1984 Winter Olympics

PM I typically don’t jump out to recommend museums, but Sarajevo’s history is brutally colorful and worth learning about. I would recommend either the War Childhood Museum or the National Museum. (Warning: these museums can be hard to see).

Something doesn’t interest you, or have more time? Here are some more ideas:
