Valentine’s day is all about love and telling people you love them – including your kids. When I was a kid (and well into my 20’s), my mom would get us little trinkets that made me feel so special. When I became a mom, I knew I wanted to do that for my kids too. Here are some simple ways to celebrate Valentine’s day with your kids and make them feel loved.
- Make a heartfelt, personalized Valentine for each of your kiddos. Bonus if they are handmade and handwritten. Yes, you could always get them something pre-made, but take the opportunity to actually write something special to your children. You can even put them in a save box and give them to your child when they graduate high school or for some other special event. It would be such a personal gift, full of love, for them to be able to look back on their childhood years.
- Help your child craft a Valentine for someone else; like their dad, grandparents or a sibling. Not only will they love to make the Valentine, but they will also be excited to give something they have spent time creating.
- Give them a treat. Something for the special occasion that you wouldn’t normally give them. Heart chocolates or red cupcakes come to mind, but it doesn’t have to be too sweet if you don’t like to give them desserts. You could try something a little more healthy or natural like chocolate covered cherries or strawberries.
- Play a board game or do a special activity that you wouldn’t normally do on a typical night. We love to play kid games like Pop the Pig.
- Give them a small gift. It doesn’t have to be something elaborate or expensive, but just a little something to say ‘I was thinking about you and you are special to me’. I’ll do something like a new pair of socks, play dough or a plant for my toddlers, and yogurt bites, a new ball or new sippy cup for my babies.
- Have a special dinner as a family. Maybe you will be going out with your significant other later in the night, but I still think it is nice to make a special meal with your kids too, you don’t have to eat it! My favorites are make your own heart shaped pizza and fondue.
These are small little gestures that won’t break the bank and don’t take too much time, but will make your kids feel extra loved. Do you or will you do any of these? What special things do you do with your kids on Valentine’s Day?
